Mt Makalu Expedition, is the fifth highest peak in the world, standing tall at 8,463m. It is situated at the heart of the eastern Himalayas. This beautiful mountain is situated just 14 miles east of Mt Everest in the Khumbu region. Mt Makalu looks impressive, but its perfect pyramid structure with four sharp ridges makes this mountain even more spectacular.
Mt Makalu Expedition starts with a flight to Tumlingtar (the only airport in the region). We then walk on the trail from Chichila to Num. On the way we cross the Arun River and proceed into the Makalu Barun National Park area.
Climbing Mt. Makalu - The Spectacular Mountain
Mt Makalu is a challenging climb, as only five of its first sixteen attempts were successful. Till date, there have been a total of 210 successful ascents of Makalu and 25 fatalities. A US Expedition team, mostly from California made the first attempt on Mt. Makalu in 1954. The team trekked all the way from the Indian border near Biratnagar. In the same year, a British team climbed the mountain, but due to Hillary's serious illness he was evacuated and the expedition abandoned.
During the autumn of 1954, a French team attempted the peak again. Following spring saw successful ascents by three teams of French climbers on successive days. Similarly, in May 1961, an expedition trekked across the Mingbo La and other high passes to the foot of Makalu. They planned to climb the French route as well. However, the expedition was abandoned due to sickness, which later became a heroic struggle for survival. In 1970 the Japanese team climbed Mt. Makalu, while another French team climbed it in 1971. A Yugoslav expedition reached the summit in 1975. Whereas, in 1976 Spanish and Czechoslovakian teams joined up near the summit.
