Baruntse Expedition takes us to Mt. Baruntse Peak (7,129m/ 23,390 ft ) at the heart of the Khumbu massif. It is just west of the 8,000 meters giant Makalu, and slightly east of Lhotse and Everest. Beause, it is surrounded by Himalayan giants, High Magazine's 'Mountain Info' claims Baruntse as "the most coveted 7,000m peak in Nepal". Baruntse is one of the most accessible 7000-meter peaks which has a high summit success rate as it features a relatively "easy" route which is safely guided by our Sherpas.
As in all expeditions, our team of climbing Sherpas will provide expert guidance. That is why we focus on ample time and perfect preparation allowing climbers to concentrate on acclimatization and in getting stronger for the eventual summit push.
Baruntse Expedition - The Climb
The South-East Ridge (our guided route) is a straight forward snow climb. However, some steep sections of ice grade up to 50°. A prominent ice cliff at about 7,000 meters requires fixed ropes. Sections of the corniced upper summit ridge also require fixed ropes.
The safest time to climb Baruntse is in the spring when snow conditions are at the best. Our regular expedition approach begins at Lukla and takes you across the Hongu valley, which is one of the wildest and beautiful regions in Nepal. You hike northward through a pristine alpine environment that rarely sees outside visitors.
The walk passes through ancient Sherpa country providing breathtaking views as well as adequate time to safely acclimatize. Due to its incredible views and location, Baruntse is certainly a rewarding adventure for any climber wishing to surpass the 7000-meter zone. Those whose ultimate desire is to pursue 8000-meter peaks may consider this climb the ideal preparation for 8000-meter goals.
