Pemba Sherpa Profile

Pemba Sherpa, born in 1989 in Sankhuwasabha district of Nepal, which boasts the majestic presence of the world’s 5th highest mountain Mt. Makalu standing tall at 8,463m. Growing up in the lap of Mt. Makalu was a natural calling that pulled him towards the Himalayas.

An experienced climber in his own right, Pemba is an example among his peers. Starting out at a young age and moving up the hierarchy to conquer the Himalayan massifs including Everest. He has climbed Mt. Everest, the highest mountain in the world standing tall at 8848m, three times to his credit. This is a feat only veteran climbers can think of attempting.

Pemba’s early childhood was spent among fresh cool Himalayan breeze and green pastures of the Makalu foothills. As a child, he spent most of his days shepherding along with his friends and helping with household chores. Due to the lack of various resources and financial stability, he and his family faced these difficult days filled in hardships. Even during these difficulties, he managed to study till class three where he learnt to read and write.

It was here that he witnessed plenty of foreign tourists walking in a single file and heading into the wilderness towards the Himalayas. Anxious and inquisitive, he learnt that these foreigners come to visit and enjoy the natural beauty that the region provided. He considered himself fortunate to be able to enjoy them each living day.

To take care of his family financially and achieve a stable life, at the young age of 19 he left for the city searching for odd jobs. All throughout, he thought about the tourists and visitors heading into the deep Himalayas. As luck would have it, he landed a small job as a junior porter in a trekking firm. He further understood the intricacies of tourism industry in Nepal and the benefits that came with it.

This was the turning point for him where his interest and the childhood images vividly came to life, which captivated and encouraged him to strengthen his career in tourism. His struggle and persistence paid off eventually when he started to be recognized as strength of the company he was working for.

Initially, he worked as a porter for three years. Here he understood the importance of being on time and learnt to carry extremely heavy loads efficiently up the high mountains.

He spent the next two years as a kitchen helper. He saw the importance of correct food and diet that helped to accomplish great feats in the Base Camps and at higher altitudes. Here he had the opportunity to interact with the climbers and adventurers that flocked the Base Camps. He learnt what it meant to be a climber and a good support guide. He understood the inner sprit that drove each of them to the foot of these Himalayan Mountains.

During this time, with the acknowledgement and help of colleagues and foreign visitors, he had the opportunity to climb many smaller peaks and trek through pristine inner Nepalese landscapes. Pemba received his big break in 2013 when he was chosen to join an Indian team expedition to Mt. Everest. This was a dream that he had been secretly wishing. He successfully carried his duty as a climbing guide and summited Mt. Everest along with the team members.

For Pemba, it is always life and safety first. One can always come back to conquer if you live through the rough times. Climbing and summit target is not an issue in totality, but returning home safely into the arms of one’s family is. This is the philosophy he lives by each day and wishes the same for his clients as well. He is an avid adventurer and goes that extra mile to lend a helping hand to whoever is in need.

Future for Pemba Sherpa is always mountaineering and the tourism sector. He sees great opportunities in the years ahead.

He has climbed many peaks and mountains in recent years and wishes to expand his experiences further. Some of the highlights of his career are:
